The Question

Where music, peace and human encounter meet.

How can music create the conditions for genuine encounter — and what does that encounter make possible that no other form of diplomacy, education or community practice can produce?

This question organizes Bridges for Dialogue's intellectual work. It lives at the intersection of peace studies, musicology, embodied practice, cultural diplomacy, education and conflict transformation.

Two decades of practice generated the question. Graduate research at Soka University gave Patricia Vlieg and Vilma Esquivel the space to formalize two distinct, connected contributions.

From Musicking to Mediating

MA Thesis · School of International Peace Studies · Soka University · Supervised by Dr. Olivier Urbain, with Dr. Jonathan Luckhurst

Contribution. Demonstrates that sustained musical practice develops relational capacities essential for mediation and dialogue, resulting in the Musicking Mediator framework and ARTI.

Through embodied autoethnography and critical incident analysis, the research identifies capacities developed through decades of musical practice: polyphonic listening, somatic co-regulation, temporal stewardship and structured improvisation.

These findings form the Musicking Mediator framework. Sustained musicking cultivates relational phronesis — practical, somatic wisdom — operationalized through ARTI.

“The musically-formed mediator does not merely facilitate dialogue but orchestrates relational possibility.”

Sounds of Identity

Panamanian Folk Songs as Decolonial Narratives of Cultural Memory and Collective Reimagining · Soka University

Contribution. Demonstrates that Panamanian folk songs function as living practices of cultural memory and peacebuilding, beyond their role as artistic heritage.

Its research corpus is Cabanga — Panamá en el Corazón, examined across fourteen songs through the interwoven themes of land, longing and legacy.

The songs operate as sonic diagnostics, making visible structures that continue to organize territory, identity and memory. They also facilitate communal healing and re-existence: the creative construction of alternative ways of being.

The research calls for a decolonization of listening, recognizing folk song as legitimate embodied knowledge and a resource for pluriversal futures.

“To understand people, we must engage with their folk songs.”

Vilma's Framework

Embodied, affective and temporal learning prepare the ground for ARTI.

These are connected parts of the Musicking Mediator framework.

01 · Formation

Embodied · Affective · Temporal

Body · Emotion · Time

The dimensions through which conflict is lived, and which practitioner formation must learn to hold.

02 · Cultivable Response

ARTI

Attunement · Regulation · Temporality · Improvisation

Four integrated capacities cultivated through sustained musical practice.

03 · Practice

Field Application

Residencies · concerts · dialogue

The capacities are tested in real encounters with communities, institutions and artistic collaborators.

04 · Research

Articulated Knowledge

Reflection · analysis · language

Practice generates questions, evidence and concepts that return to formation.

Relational Infrastructure Lab

Intellectual Position

We believe practice generates knowledge.

Research begins inside rehearsals, conversations, communities and artistic collaborations.

Scholarship gives language to those experiences. Practice keeps testing them.

The knowledge needed to heal fractured human systems may already live in the body, inscribed through musical practice: the capacity to sense what cannot yet be spoken, respond when no procedure exists and hold complexity without losing presence.

The question remains open. That is its strength.

Every residency, concert, dialogue and research partnership is another opportunity to investigate it together.

If your institution is interested in exploring these questions with us, we would love to begin the conversation.
